A bit of a twist this week with Christmas on the horizon and the parade in town.  Immediately following the parade this year, much like the Ryan Art Gallery did in years past, wine tasting will take place where your taste is free with the donation of an unwrapped $10 and up toy.  A uniformed Marine will be on hand to help with donations, and Jar Head Wines will be the pour from 12:30 – 4:00 pm.  I selected Jarhead because owner and winegrower Adam Firestone is a retired Captain of the Marine Corps and proceeds of the wine go to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.  Jarhead produces three wines that are actually quite good for the price:  Jarhead Chard (Santa Barbara County), Jarhead Red (California) and Jarhead Reserve Red (Santa Ynez Valley).  What a great opportunity to spread some Christmas cheer two-fold and enjoy some cheer as well.

As the afternoon progresses, the venue will change but the toy donation remains the same.  From 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm, local wine expert Erik Johanson will be on hand with a flight of five fabulous wines, all for free with your “Toys for Tots” donation.  The wines are Demetria Pantheon Red Rhone Blend, Ancient Peaks Zinfandel, Bodegas Triton Tempranillo, Zaca Mesa Grenache, and Heinz Eifel Eiswein.  Zaca Mesa Grenache: This spectacular 100% Grenache is a huge success.  It’s so delicious, you can hardly stop drinking it.  Just oozes in raspberry and red cherry puree and caramelized, smoky oak richness, yet is thoroughly dry.  An amazing, unforgettable wine that establishes a new benchmark for California Grenache from this winery that was an early pioneer in Rhone varieties.”  95 Points, Editors’ Choice.  Wine Enthusiast, October 2010.  Bodegas Triton: Today you can enjoy this elegant wine created from old vines of Tempranillo from the best areas in the south of Zamora province. Meticulously vinified in small lots and aged in the best French oak for fifteen months, the wine has a distinctive balance of ripe red fruit flavors and a delicate spiciness. A hint of dark chocolate completes the long finish. Demetria Pantheon: This biodynamic red blend  is a rigorous combination of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre, which expresses the beautiful  fruit and gentle earthiness of the Demetria Estate.  Enjoy this wine with grilled chicken, burgers or steak.  Ancient Peaks Zinfandel:  This fantastic Zin is the flagship wine for Ancient Peaks, the only winery in Santa Margarita.  The 2008 Zinfandel begins with intense aromas of black fruits with enticing accents of anise and vanilla. The palate is bright and juicy, unfolding with flavors of black cherry, raspberry and plum. A dash of black pepper accompanies fresh acidity on a long, structured finish. Heinz Eifel Eiswein: This authentic “Ice Wine” literally is chardonnay grapes allowed to freeze on the vine before harvest, which produces an extremely sweet dessert style wine.  It’s fantastic taste and unique bottle make this wine a great Christmas gift.

We hope to see you here some time on Saturday and hope you can help out the Toys for Tots gift campaign.
