Gene Perez

Business Enriched Network would like to thank all the businesses that made our fundraiser event such a success.  During this long economic recession cut backs and slow times have impacted us all.  Education has felt the blunt of the cut backs with teachers being laid off and classroom sizes getting bigger.  Typically education is the first sector to feel the impact and the cuts.  Which is a shame since education is an investment in our future, and todays’ students are and could be tomorrow’s leaders.

Our second annual poker shuffle event was a success and mainly due in part to the local businesses that helped and contributed to our event.  Our fundraiser was for a scholarship but with an emphasize on a local student as well as local education.  The student had to show that he had some sort of economic challenges as well as social challenges.  These students can even be considered at risk kids but have been able to show the ability to over come the obstacles that lay in front of them, may or may not fit the profile of a typical student seeking a scholarship.  The recipient of the scholarship can use the funds within a year to attend any local accredited school.   Our event was a success due to the participation of local businesses as well as the contribution made from our members.  I would like to introduce two of our members that helped make this years’ event such a success.  There is a nice video on our website of the fundraiser with some of the events and businesses there as well which you can see at

Phyllis Vargas, Independent Beauty Consultant with Mary Kay

Phyllis was born and raised in Nipomo and moved to Santa Maria in 1971 with her husband, Robert.  They have been married for 39 years and have 3 adult children with 4 grandsons. Phyllis has held many different jobs, among them she has been a busgirl, a secretary, a bank teller, sold Singer sewing machines, hired technical personnel for Diablo Canyon and Vandenberg AFB, and  worked 20 years for an airline.  Between her and Robert, they have owned 7 businesses.  Phyllis has found her passion in helping other women acheive their own goals; whether that means extra income for the family, self-esteem and confidence, or just some great positive time with other women. Mary Kay has been around since 1963 and has a proven track record regarding skin care and cosmetics. Phyllis recently earned the use of her first, free, Mary Kay consultant car, the Chevy Malibu.
Owning her own business (a successful one!) has given her the freedom to prioritize her life around her faith and her family.  She does community service with the company OneStop in both Grover Beach and San Luis Obispo by holding Image Workshops for women who are out of work and needing a boost in the self-confidence area. She also volunteers at Merrill Gardens and Santa Maria Terrace (assisted living facilities in Santa Maria) one hour each month by holding Skin Care Classes, Luscious Lips classes, and Satin Hands classes. You can visit Phyllis online at or call her for a personal appointment.  If you have skin, you are eligible for a complimentary facial/makeover.  She can be reached at 805-680-1304.
