Altrusa Membership Event to be held February 20
Altrusa International of Santa Maria will hold its annual Membership Event Sunday, 20 February from 1-4 PM at the Santa Maria Elks Lodge. Members of the community are invited to attend this event and learn more about the organization and its work in our valley for over 50 years. Some of the projects include:
Established the Senior Citizen’s Project (later to become the Elwin Mussell Senior Center)
Purchased the first bus for SMOOTH, which later became SMOOTH/SMAT (paid for the maintenance for 5 years and equipped a bus for the handicapped)
Assisted with the establishment of Santa Maria Independent Living Environment (SMILE)
Purchased 9 Life Line Units for Santa Maria Medical Center
Established Before-and After-School Day Care Centers in all Orcutt Elementary Schools and continue to fund the project.
Continuing member of Central Coast Literacy Council and participant in their annual Spelling Bee.
Books donated monthly to Community Health Clinics in Santa Maria and Guadalupe, in addition to the Veterans Clinic and many other non-profit organizations.
Monthly donations of personal hygiene items, clothes and other necessities to the LazE Daze Home.
Sponsored a room at the Transitional Center (TC House) and continue to supply items for the women and children living there.
Grant Applications Now Available
Altrusa International Foundation, Santa Maria Announces Spring Grant Applications available. The Altrusa International Foundation of Santa Maria has a long history of supporting programs in the area, with over $350,000.00 given out in grants. Altrusa International Foundation, Santa Maria Fall Grant recipients of $19,000 were: Community Partners in Caring, OUSD Campus Connection, Santa Maria Valley Humane Society, North County Rape Crisis, Central Coast Literacy Council, Alliance for Pharmaceutical Access, Inc., Orcutt Children’s Art’s Foundation, Mane Prairie Sanctuary, Teachers Network of Santa Barbara County, Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum, Joe Nightingale PreSchool, Community Action Commission, Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara, Boys and Girls Club, Orcutt Academy High School, Friends of the Santa Maria Library, Town Center Gallery, Gen Span and Elks Mini Rodeo. In addition Friends of the Guadalupe Library received $435 in memorial donations.
