The Flying U Rodeo livestock were the biggest winners at this year’s 68th annual Elks Rodeo.  With over 20 National Finals Rodeo cowboys trying their best to settle the score the Bulls and Broncs won out. One unlucky bronc rider that was too sore to ride might have been the lucky one as a record number of cowboys hit the ground prior to the 8 second whistle. He was the only cowboy to not attempt to ride his horse all weekend.  The bulls were the big winners with only 9 bulls ridden out of over 80 attempts.  “This is some of the best rodeo stock I have seen this side of the National Finals (rodeo’s super bowl) or any other rodeo in years” stated long time Santa Maria Elks Rodeo fan and past Exalted Ruler Bob Torres.

Jay Turner local DJ for Sunny Country Radio confirmed that the energy level in the grandstands was of a level that had not been seen in years.  Over 19,000 rodeo fans cheered as rodeo announcer Bob Tallman kept the information flowing and added all the stats and color to the 4 action packed performances. “ Bob has a way of making you know that you are seeing the very best professional athletes this sport has to offer and we are not just talking about the cowboys”. “ I guess that is why he has announced more National Finals Rodeos that any other announcer”. Promoter Seth Doulton proclaimed.

The crowds were not the only thing that was up as the numbers of Professional  Rodeo Cowboys (PRCA) entries were also up.

Long time Santa Maria Elk and this year’s Elks Parade Grand Marshall Robert Acquistapace said it best “There is something that does not happen all the time but when you get the right entertainment and the right fans in the seats there is magic. This year’s Elks Rodeo had that magic.

“The sponsors and local businesses get all the credit” stated Seth Doulton.  “They were the ones that pulled together and got the word out that help pull in the biggest crowds in recent history” he continued.

All and all the brand new Elks Rodeo with the new and approved VIP area and on site Coors dance hall was a hit.  Both were packed every night and the dance floor was smoking till closing time.

Happy trails till next year see you at the 2012 Santa Maria Elks Rodeo May 31st thru June 3rd 2012.
