As part of it’s ongoing education and community service programming, the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museumm once again, offer its popular week-long Saftey Town camp for kids August 1 – 5, 2011. Held at the Discovery Museum, this nationally recognized program, developed in 1964, is the perfect introduction to basic traffic, household, fire and personal safety for young children ages 4 – 6 years old. Taught by a local, credentialed educator, the program will focus on a different topic each day and exposes youngsters to local community safety experts from the Police Department, Fire Department, and Animal Control, who provide non-threatening information and skills to help children develop foundations for safety-awareness. Using fun and educational strategies like drawing, singing, and movement, children will enjoy learning and will have tools and memories to draw on as they continue learning and understanding safety after they finish the program. In addition to talking to local safety experts, children in the Safety Town program will develop practical abilities like how to cross the street, how to identify basic traffic signs and situations, ways to appreciate and respect pets and other animals, how to access the 9-1-1 emergency system and many other age-appropriate and useful skills. Children will receive materials they can share with their families each day. “My son got so much more than I realized he would during Safety Town last year,” shares Leigh Collier after her then-five year old son participated in the week long camp. Leigh goes on to say, “He enjoyed teaching my husband and I everything he learned each day and remembers many of the safety concepts from last Summer. He is looking forward to participating in the camp again this year.”
