The mission of the Central Coast Literacy Council (CCLC) is “To teach adults in northern Santa Barbara County to read, write, speak and understand English so they can develop their full potential and benefit themselves, their families, and the community.”
The CCLC offers literacy training to adults in need. Classes are conducted by volunteer tutors that are specially trained to tutor adults. The CCLC offers tutoring sessions at over 10 locations on the central coast.
This grass-root program is highly effective and improves the community. Our dedicated volunteers devote time and energy to helping others learn English and to read, but additional funds are needed to buy supplies, books, and cover administrative costs that go with running such a large program.
Our primary fundraiser is the Annual Spelling Bee being held this year on September 17, 2011 at 1:00 pm in the Town Center Mall. It is our goal to have 40 teams (2 per team) competing in this year’s event. Each team is sponsored by an organization or business in the community. Click here for a copy of the brochure http://www.centralcoastliteracy.org/2011SBeeBro_web.pdf. You can help us:
- Encourage your staff or co-workers to be on a team
- Participate as a Spelling Team Member
- Sponsor a Team ($250 donation)
- Volunteer to assist with the many tasks necessary to put this event together
In this economy many of the organizations who fund the CCLC through grants and donations are finding it ever more difficult to fund at past levels. This makes this fundraiser even more critical.
