The “Great Book Giveaway” will take place at Allan Hancock College November 21-22, where more than 3,500 books will be distributed free of charge thanks to Northern Santa Barbara County United Way and United Way of Santa Barbara County. The new books, ranging from novels to sports-related topics, were obtained by the agencies as part of the new national program, Good360. In all, United Way obtained more than $700,000 worth of donated books for redistribution within Santa Barbara County communities.
The two organizations distributed several hundred cases of books last month to various businesses and agencies, and now the Northern Santa Barbara County United Way has partnered with Hancock to make additional books available to the college’s more than 11,000 students.
The free book distribution will take place in the Santa Maria campus Student Center from 10 a.m. Monday, November 21, until 4 p.m. Tuesday, November 22.
Students are encouraged to stop by and take as many books as they can use. “We are excited to partner with the United Way to make these books available to students. Not only will they help fill their home libraries, but the books could make great holiday gifts for students on a budget,” said Kelly Underwood, Allan Hancock College Writing Center coordinator and “Great Book Giveaway” organizer. “Anything that expands our students’ reading experience and literary access is a positive step.”
Books will also be distributed through the college’s EOPS program to its participants and families. For more information about the “Great Book Giveaway,” contact Underwood at (805) 922-6966 ext. 3201 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
