One might think that the title of the AHC Singers’ spring concert, “By Popular Demand,” would reflect accumulated audience requests – but that would be wrong.  Not that attendees won’t appreciate the musical selections, but according to Choir Director Ann Lucas, D.M.A., “the choir itself has long wanted to perform a Disney-Broadway-show tunes concert, and this spring, the time has finally come!”

The performance is set for Tuesday May 8, at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church at the corner of Cook and Broadway in Santa Maria.

“This concert will feature the most student soloists ever in the various selections, which include medleys from three Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals as well as a collection of Disney songs and some sophisticated arrangements of tunes by George Gershwin and Cole Porter,” Lucas said.  “The choir has had to be flexible in adopting various vocal styles that range from stride-style jazz to the lushest, almost operatic delivery so inherent to the Rodgers and Hammerstein oeuvre.”

The choir’s pianist, Dave Alm, will guest conduct the Gershwin/Porter songs while Director Lucas takes the keyboard.  Lucas said both hope they can keep the choir from dancing right off the stage as this medley unfolds.

Tickets may be obtained at the door, in the fine arts department (building F) on the Santa Maria campus, or from any choir member.  Admission is $7; there is no reserved seating.  For more information, call (805) 922-6966 ext 3412 or ext 3252.
