The Tailwinds Bicycle Club of Santa Maria will hold its annual fundraiser, The Windmill Century, on Saturday, July 21, 2012. Windmill proceeds are used to support our “Bike Giveaway and Safety Program in local elementary schools.”
Tailwinds provide other philanthropic, bike related, donations which include: Sponsorship of the “Wheelin’ Warriors”, a group of young people with special needs, who love to ride and were formerly a part of the Special Olympics until their venue was discontinued due to lack of funding; Donation of bicycles, helmets, and locks to the children of Guadalupe through the Guadalupe Police Department; Donation of funds and support to the Erik Okerblum “Campaign Against Distracted Driving”; support of Marian Medical Center’s “Bike to Work” program and Donation to the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition, an advocacy and resource organization that promotes improved safer bicycling conditions in Santa Barbara County.
In order to fund these charitable projects we host our annual Windmill Century Ride, (a 100, 57, or 25 mile bicycle ride). In 2011, thanks to funds raised at this event, we were able to give away 12 bicycles and twenty four helmets to three local elementary schools as well as donations to the above mentioned agencies.
Sponsorship by local businesses helps defray the cost of putting on such an event. The Tailwinds Bicycle Club is seeking business sponsors who would like to donate cash, food items (sodas, cookies, strawberries, etc) or items for our “goodie bags” and raffle. Because the club is a “not for profit 501c7”, business contributions cannot be deducted as “charity”. However, they can be listed as an advertising expense. In exchange, for contributions of $100 or more in cash or product, the club will advertise the contributors’ business names/websites in the club’s Newsletter (6 issues/year), our website (for a full year) and on the back of the Windmill commemorative t-shirt.
Windmill riders come from all over California as well as other states. Many stay overnight, Friday and Saturday, thereby contributing to the Santa Maria economy as well as the fundraiser.
The Windmill Century route takes the rider through the Santa Maria Valley, Foxen, and Alisos Canyons, as well as Los Alamos, Sisquoc, Casmalia, and Guadalupe. It begins and ends at Pioneer Park. All riders will enjoy a delicious Santa Maria Style BBQ of top sirloin, chicken, or veggie at the end of the ride, snacks at rest stops, road assistance if necessary, and a commemorative t-shirt, all for a very reasonable fee of $60.
We think it is the Best Century Deal in California!!!
