PCPA Theaterfest’s summer season of theatrical masterpieces will play out in three venues in Santa Maria and Solvang from June 14 through September 30, 2012. Kicking off the season is the remount of the sparkling new musical, Little Women. It plays in the outdoor Festival Theater in Solvang June 14 – July 1. With book by Allan Knee, music by Jason Howland and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein, this effervescent new musical is based on the Louisa May Alcott novel, which follows the adventures of Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy March as they grow up in Civil War America. Karin Hendricks and Elizabeth Stuart reprise their roles as Jo and Marmee, respectively.
The season continues with the next three shows first opening in Santa Maria, then transferring to Solvang. While Little Women is playing in Solvang, the comedy by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, The Rivals, runs in the Marian Theatre June 21 – 30 then under the stars July 5 – 22. Sheridan’s masterpiece of satire surrounds us with a symphony of exuberant laughter, youth and romance, played out with wit and wisdom in 18th Century Bath. If you laughed at The Importance of Being Earnest and loved Pride and Prejudice, get ready to laugh and fall in love again! Resident Equity Artists Erik Stein plays Sir Anthony Absolute, Quinn Mattfeld plays Captain Jack Absolute, Peter S. Hadres plays Sir Lucius O’Trigger, and Kitty Balay plays Mrs. Malaprop. Returning guest actor Stephanie Philo (Sylvia, Two Gentlemen of Verona) plays Lydia Languish.
Fresh off its National Tour is Legally Blonde, the Musical playing July 6 – 22, in the Marian Theatre then July 27 – August 19, in the Solvang Festival Theater. It will be directed and choreographed by Michael Jenkinson (West Side Story, Hairspray). The star of UCLA’s Delta Nu, Elle Woods, proves once and for all that girl power can change the future! Against the odds, she moves to the head of class, and the top of the firm, with her charm, Chihuahua and the classic bend and snap! Elle realizes, and America will too, that brain power is as potent as being a blonde in a pink dress! Jessica Crouch, (National Tour All Shook Up) will play Elle Woods.
From the Tony and Olivier Award-Winning Director of Les Misérables and the creators of Jane Eyre, PCPA presents the musical hit, Daddy Long Legs, Music and Lyrics by Paul Gordon and Book by John Caird. It will play in the Marian Theatre August 1 – 19, then in the open air Solvang Festival Theatre August 23 – September 9. At the turn of the 20th century, Jerusha Abbott, an orphan, is given a chance to blossom in mind and spirit through the generosity of an anonymous benefactor. This musical adaptation of Jean Webster’s 1912 popular novel explores the nature of friendship and independence and how that changes forever, giver and recipient.
Closing the 2012 summer season is the classic masterpiece by Anton Chekhov, Three Sisters. It will play in the Severson Theatre September 6 – 30. Chekhov’s brilliant tragi-comedy invites us to provincial 19th Century Russia, and paints a portrait of a family in crisis and a world in transition. His belief in a dynamic future with all its possibilities is tempered by the harsh light of day, and a duel. Three Sisters will be directed by Roger DeLaurier and features PCPA’s entire company of Resident Actors.
