The 5th anniversary of Santa Maria’s newest public library building will be celebrated with a day-long program Saturday, Aug. 24, at the library, 421 S. McClelland Street.

The event will continue from 10 a.m. to about 5 p.m. both inside the library and outside on Lavagnino Plaza. Music groups, a barbeque lunch and various activities for children, including a magician, will highlight the day.

The Appellation Bluegrass Band will play on the plaza from 10 a.m. to noon.  The Amigos, which plays big band swing and jazz, will perform from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The only expense for the day will be for those who buy the barbeque lunch, offered for $8 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The lunch is a fund-raising activity of the Friends of the Santa Maria Public Library.

The Friends will give away 300 children’s books.

Two storytime programs will be given in the Altrusa Theater in the  Children’s Room,  for preschoolers from 10:30 to 11 a.m. and for kindergarteners to second graders from 11:30 to noon. All children visiting the library will receive a prize bag.

Magician Shawn McMaster will perform at 2 p.m. in the Altrusa Theater.

The Friends of the Library, who are sponsoring the day’s events, will serve birthday cake in the library lobby at 3 p.m.
