Share your love of live orchestra music:   Volunteer with the Music Van (805) 925 – 0412

The Santa Maria Philharmonic Society brings two significant music education programs to the youth in our community through the Children’s Concerts and the Music Van. The Children’s Concerts bring fourth graders to see and hear a live performance by a professional orchestra.  Just this last March, well over 2,000 fourth graders experienced “Peter and the Wolf.”

The Music Van is the reverse of the Concerts – the Music Van brings orchestral instruments to the kids! This Spring, the Society plans to introduce over 1,000 third graders to the instruments of an orchestra by letting them hear, see, and touch them.

The Music Van is a completely volunteer run program. The van is generously provided by Toyota of Santa Maria, and the instruments are loaned (at no charge this year) by the Santa Barbara Symphony. The volunteers work in teams driving the van, moving the instruments and providing a presentation to small groups of children. The program starts this Monday April 28, 2014, and will run for 7 weeks with presentations Monday through Friday usually from 8am to 12 noon each day.

Here’s where you can make a difference.  Our volunteer pool needs more willing hands to cover all these third-grade classes.  It is not necessary to have a background in music; all you need is a love of music and children. The current volunteers are anxious to train new people.  Even if you can volunteer only for a few days in the coming weeks, your help is welcome and you will find that every moment spent is very rewarding.

This is your opportunity to get involved in music education, a chance to MAKE AN IMPACT.  If you are interested please leave a message at (805) 925-0412.  Please consider becoming an integral part of keeping music alive on the Central Coast.
