Tailwinds Bicycle Club of Santa Maria will hold its annual fundraiser, The Windmill Century, on Saturday, July 19, 2014. The Windmill is a 28, 62 or 100 mile bike ride which is open to the public. The route takes riders through the Santa Maria Valley, Casmalia, Lompoc, Solvang, the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail and Sisquoc. It begins and ends at Pioneer Park. Registration fee Includes: a commemorative T-shirt, Support and Gear as needed, rest stops, route markings and maps, lunch (on the Century route) and a delicious, all you can eat, Santa Maria Style BBQ hosted by Santa Maria’s Elks Lodge members, featuring top sirloin, chicken or Vegan, for everyone at the end of their ride.
All proceeds from the Windmill, less expenses, are given back to the community through our Bicycle Safety Essay
Contest which is held in local elementary schools each year. The club also donates bikes to the Good Samaritan
Shelter, the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Maria, children in the CASA program, students attending Allan Hancock
College (in need of a bike to get to and from the college) and financial support to the Veterans’ Ride 2 Recovery
program. the Campaign Against Distracted Driving and the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition.
Sponsorship by local businesses helps defray the cost of putting on such an event and allows us to donate more bikes to charitable causes. The Tailwinds Bicycle Club is seeking business sponsors who would like to donate cash and/or product (sodas, cookies, strawberries, etc) for our rest and lunch stops. Contributions of $100 or more in cash or product entitles the business’ website to be listed on the back of the riders’ commemorative t-shirts as well as the club’s website and newsletter for a full year.
Windmill riders come from all over California as well as other states (Nevada, Arizona and Texas). Many stay overnight thereby contributing to the Santa Maria economy as well as the fundraiser.
