Operation Restoration – September 6, 2014

Rotarians serving lunch to the hungry surfers at the Pismo Pier

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria partnered with Ampsurf by providing and serving lunch to all of the participants and volunteers at Ampsurf’s Operation Restoration VIII on Saturday September 6th as part of a Community Service project. Members of the Rotary Club of Santa Maria Noontime donated all the food, prepared and served more than 100 lunches after the morning surfing session last Saturday. Randy Miller, Executive Director of Ampsurf said, “Ampsurf wouldn’t have such a great event with out (their) help and support. The Motto of Rotary International is “Service Above Self”, so an integral part of being a Rotarian is having a heart of service. The Rotarians participating that day agreed that “it was more fun that work”, and they would “gladly do it again!”

Ampsurf is a local 501(c)3 organization formed to Promote, Inspire, Educate, and Rehabilitate (PIER™) all people with disabilities and their families through the healing power of the ocean, adaptive surfing and other outdoor activities. This marks their 8th year of Operation Restoration, and eleventh year AmpSurf has been putting these events together.  One in five Americans struggle with a life-long disability and nearly two million men and women have served our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. They are coming home looking for ways to feel whole again and to fit back in to normal life. Whether they are an amputee, visually impaired, suffer from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), have quadriplegia, or suffer from a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Whether they served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf war, Iraq or Afghanistan. Whether they are a child with autism, or a young woman who has lost a limb to cancer,  AmpSurf™ offers a unique program to bring the healing power of the ocean and adaptive surfing

together for an experience that is both mentally and physically rehabilitating. For more than 10 years, AmpSurf™ has been providing Learn to Surf clinics to serve those who need them. They have served hundreds of disabled veteran American heroes as well as disabled adults and children who probably never would have had this experience if it hadn’t been for their program.

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria thanks Ampsurf for their service to our veteran’s and others with disabilities. They are proud to serve alongside them at their Operation Restoration event.
