The City of Santa Maria is pleased to announce the rollout of its Downtown Trolley beginning Sunday, December 7th. The colorful 28-passenger trolley is being introduced as the Holiday Shopping Shuttle. For an introductory regular fare of 25 cents, and 10 cents for seniors, persons with disabilities and persons with Medicare, riders can take the Holiday Shopping Shuttle to multiple downtown shopping centers.
The purpose of the Holiday Shopping Shuttle is to introduce the Downtown Trolley to Santa Maria and to the Downtown District. The Holiday Shopping Shuttle is a temporary service with the purpose of instilling interest from the Downtown Business community that will assist the City transit staff to design a permanent service that will benefit downtown Santa Maria. Transit staff will partner with downtown merchants and with the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce.
The Holiday Shopping Shuttle service will operate with eight designated trolley stops with approximately every 15 to 20 minutes. Major destinations are the Santa Maria Town Center East (the mall), Town Center West, JC Penney Shopping Center, Ross Dress for Less, Panera Bread Shopping Center, Crossroads Shopping Center, Target, and Broadway Plaza Shopping Center.
The Holiday Shopping Shuttle will operate starting Saturday, December 6th, 2014 to Saturday, January 10th, 2015. Service will be Thursdays through Fridays from 5:15 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and weekends from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Designated trolley stops are being created along the route. The Holiday Shopping Shuttle will serve these roadways: South Broadway, West Park Ave, back to South
Broadway, East Betteravia Road, South College Drive, East McCoy Lane, Crossroad Lane, South Bradley Road, Betteravia Road, back to South Broadway, West Cook
Street, South Pine Street, West Main Street, and back to South Broadway.
The Downtown Trolley will be one vehicle and one spare vehicle for preventative maintenance. However, the City will operate both vehicles for the Holiday Shopping
Shuttle to increase the frequency of service to help with the shopping needs for busy holiday season.
The trolley is equipped to accommodate passengers with disabilities; there is a lift and room for two mobility devices.
The public is invited to board the trolley at its unveiling on Friday evening, December 5th, next to City Hall, following the ceremonial lighting of the community Christmas Tree.
The tree ceremony begins at 5:15 p.m. with the lighting scheduled at 5:40 p.m.
