On Monday, February 9, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center, Cal Poly Arts proudly presents the Central Coast premiere of the Broadway’s Tony Award-winning MEMPHIS, The Musical.

Inspired by actual events, Memphis, the Musical is set where rock and roll was born in the 1950s: in the seedy nightclubs, on radio stations and inside recording studios of the musically-rich city of Memphis.

Filled with heart and an original score of roof-raising ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll, Memphis tells the fictional story of DJ Huey Calhoun, a good ole’ local boy with a passion for R&B music, and up-and-coming black singer Felicia Farrell who meet one fateful night on Beale Street. Despite the objections of Huey’s close-minded mama and Felicia’s cautious brother, who owns the featured nightclub, Huey and Felicia embark on a dangerous affair.

As their careers rise, the relationship is challenged by personal ambition and the prejudiced pressures of an outside world that is unable to accept their love; audiences will share the musical journey to see whether the couples’ love will be able to withstand the trials of separation, society, greed and fame.

Winner of four 2010 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Memphis features a Tony-winning book by Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change) and a Tony-winning original score with music by Bon Jovi’s founding member David Bryan.
