Learn more about the challenges facing educators as a means of strengthening ties between the business and education communities
Business and community leaders from throughout the Santa Maria Valley will once again spend a morning at a local school site to learn more about education. The annual event will be held on March 11, and is cosponsored by the Santa Maria Valley Industry Education Council and the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitor & Convention Bureau. School principals are partnered with Chamber representatives to learn more about the challenges facing educators, and as a means of strengthening ties between the business and education communities.
Chamber members may visit classrooms, discuss current trends or assist with student recognition programs. Every campus offers a different experience, and many Chamber members have visited multiple school sites to gain a broader understanding of private and public school issues. By becoming informed about our schools, we are all better able to support teachers in their efforts to educate our community’s youth.
Business leaders also share their expertise with principals who enjoy hearing about other professional fields. Managers and employers share information about hiring trends, training needs, and job opportunities. They often share career information with students, and can talk with classes about success in the workplace. It is this exchange of information that makes the Principal For a Day program so successful.
The Principal for a Day event continues to be a popular activity for both the school principals and the Chamber members. All schools are assigned on a first come, first served basis. Participants will spend the morning at a school site, and then everyone will meet at the Elks Lodge for the Chamber’s monthly membership meeting. A highlight of the Principal For a Day activity is the opportunity to discuss the challenges and successes that occur every day throughout our schools.
The meeting’s agenda will also include a Computer Connections distribution to some deserving students who will receive a complete computer package. The Computer Connections program was established as a partnership between the Chamber and the Industry Education Council in an effort to assist children who do not have access to technology. To date, the program has distributed more than 200 computers to needy students.
