Local authors Wendelin Van Draanen and Mark Parsons will be the keynote speakers at the Santa Maria Public Library Foundation’s first fundraiser to be held March 16, 6 p.m. at the Market Restaurant in the Town Center Mall.
The couple recently returned from a cross country road trip publicizing their books and encouraging children and teens to read. Van Draanen is the author of the Edgar-Award winning Sammy Keyes mystery series, the Christopher Award winning Shredderman books, and many other loved children’s titles. Her husband, Mark Parsons, is the author of Road Rash, a teen book published last year.
The Library Foundation was recently incorporated as a non-profit 501c3 organization to benefit all of the libraries in the Santa Maria Public Library system including Cuyama, Guadalupe, Los Alamos, Orcutt, and Santa Maria. The foundation’s mission is to spearhead fund-raising campaigns to bridge the gap caused by shrinking city and county budgets and the growing needs of the Santa Maria Public Library system’s diverse communities.
Tickets for the event are $45 which includes a dinner entrée choice of chicken, beef or vegetarian with a glass of wine or soft drink, and a raffle for gifts donated by local businesses. The event is open to all ages and tickets are available for purchase at the Santa Maria Public Library and Orcutt Library circulation desks.
