On Sunday, May 3, 2015 at 7 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center, Cal Poly Arts presents electrifying fiddle phenoms NATALIE MacMASTER and DONNELL LEAHY in a powerhouse Celtic showcase, “VISIONS OF CAPE BRETON AND BEYOND.”
Natalie MacMaster is the globally-acclaimed Cape Breton fiddle player who has appeared on numerous TV shows and sold over 200,000 albums. Donnell Leahy is the incendiary musical leader of double platinum-selling, festival-headlining Celtic family group, Leahy. The two musical prodigies met as teenagers, found individual massive career success, and eventually reconnected, married, and went on to become the First Couple of Celtic music.
Today, the famous couple have six children and with this touring concert, the family all performs together to sold-out crowds in theatres across North America and the UK.
“Visions of Cape Breton and Beyond” highlights the unique talents, influences and stories of the gifted Leahy clan. Joined by Celtic dancers and singers from their hometowns of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and Lakefield, Ontario, this rousing evening with the “First Family of Fiddlers” will give audiences a peek into the Leahys’ celebrated musical and personal journey.
MacMaster and Leahy also just completed an album, One, and producer Bob Ezrin explains how exciting it is to work with people who are masters at their craft: “Both Natalie and Donnell are truly brilliant musicians whose instruments have become a natural extension of their bodies. They are such accomplished players that whatever they think of, they can produce on their violins. It’s absolutely magical!” The Cohan Center performance will feature several fresh, energetic songs from their latest release.
A free pre-concert lecture will be held by Cal Poly professor Mitchell Wolf, beginning at 6 p.m. in the PAC’s Philips Lecture Hall.
Student and adult tickets for the performance range from $24 to $48 and may be purchased in advance at the Performing Arts Center Ticket Office, Monday – Saturday, noon to 6 p.m, located on Grand Avenue on the Cal Poly campus. The Ticket Office is also open as of noon on all performance days.
