Care Net, a non-profit 501c 3 has been serving Santa Maria for 25 years. They receive funding from individuals, businesses, churches, and fundraisers. Care Net does not receive any government funding.
All of Care Net’s services are free and confidential. They provide pregnancy tests, parenting classes, baby and maternity clothing and supplies, community outreach to the local schools and Juvenile Hall, and after-abortion support. Care Net does not refer or perform abortions but they inform clients on all of their options: parenting, abortion, and adoption.
Their parenting classes are one-on-one and open to anyone who needs them. They have over 150 topics ranging from pregnancy to adolescents, and even curriculum just for dads. Care Net receives client referrals from Child Welfare Services and the Probation Department as these agencies their classes as a way clients can be reunified with their children. They also receive referrals from Marian Hospital, local doctors, and teachers.
Since 1998, Care Net’s community outreach team has been invited into the local public and private high schools and Allan Hancock College to teach students about healthy relationships, STDs, fetal development, and adoption. In the first quarter of 2015, they spoke to over 4,000 students. By the end of the year, they are expecting that number to double!
Juvenile Hall has been a big part of Care Net’s community outreach as a team goes into the girls unit once a week to do a bible study with the girls. It has been very well received and Care Net was asked last year by Juvenile Hall to create a Life Skills program for the youth to teach them about goal setting, how to find a job, how to complete a job application, opening a checking account, budgeting, and other relevant skills as these youth approach adulthood. Care Net holds the 6-week sessions 3-4 times a year with the next one starting up mid-July.
Care Net’s after-abortion support group takes place three times a year for women who have had an abortion. It is a time where they can receive healing from the effects abortion in a non-judgmental way. They have seen many women healed over the past 10 years.
We are excited to soon offer ultrasound and STD testing to our already free services.
