Marty Willey has built a long-time Orcutt business by giving customers a fresh sense of style with unique decor, exclusive merchandise, eclectic gifts, jewelry and more.
“When I was running through my ideas on what to name the store, my mother asked ‘What kind of store do you want’ and I said ‘I want the kind of store that people come to get nice things when company’s coming,’ and I realized that’s it; that’s the name,” she said.
Company’s Coming, 1108 Clark Ave. near Albertsons, has been a staple in Orcutt for 37 years. This week Willey marked the anniversary with a ribbon cutting by the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors.
“It’s evolved over the years,” she said. “When I first started the popular style in 1978 was ducks and Canadian geese, very country,” she said. “Now it’s somewhat Mediterranean, some shabby chic and other things. Sometimes you don’t go with the trend, you have to go with your gut.”
A remodeled wall of the shop features Haitian sculptures made from old steel drums.
“I like to have different items. If you can get it down the street, then it’s not special,” Willey said.
Her store has doubled in size over the years and features a variety of items, ranging from table top pieces, wall art, candles, baby clothes and baby items, gourmet, and jewelry. She offers some exclusive items, such as Vera Bradley, Brighton and Pandora.
Her longevity in business has been a blessing with customers spanning generations.
“There’s one customer in there right now who brought her little kids in years ago. Those kids are in their 40’s now, and they’re bringing their kids in. They’ve registered here for their weddings, and I’ve gone to their weddings.”
