Donations are being sought from the community to fund Santa Maria’s Fourth of July fireworks show. The venue for this year’s event is changing from the Santa Maria Fairpark to Pioneer Valley High School, and with this new venue comes expanded afternoon events leading up to the evening show.

Tax-deductible donations to fund the fireworks show can be made to PLAY Inc., a non-profit partner with the Recreation and Parks Department. Contributions can be sent to PLAY Inc., Attention: Fireworks, 615 S. McClelland St., Santa Maria, CA 93454.

“Providing a great fireworks show also is an important part of getting the community to minimize use of illegal fireworks,” said Mark van de Kamp, the City’s Public Information Officer. “And, by moving the fireworks show from the middle of town, to the outskirts of town, that minimizes the impacts on as many residents as possible.”

The City identified the high school as a potential site for the fireworks show because it provides a large venue for parking and events, and discussed the concept with school district and high school officials, who agreed to partner on the event. The high school is organizing the afternoon festivities leading up to the fireworks show.

Because the 4th of July falls less than 10 days prior to the opening of the Santa Barbara County Fair, officials at the Santa Maria Fairpark officials agreed that the City might be able to provide more focus on producing a high-quality 4th of July event by partnering with another venue, with more daytime activities.

Questions about fireworks donations may be directed to the City Manager’s Office, 925-0951 ext. 2372. Questions about the afternoon show events, including booth opportunities, may be directed to the high school’s Lisa Walters, 922-1305 ext. 5508 or
