Great American MelodramaThe Great American Melodrama proudly kicks off its summer repertory season with Under the Boardwalk. Written by Erik Stein with additional lyrics by Jordan Richardson, this hilarious show was originally produced by the Melodrama in 2009 to near universal (though admittedly local) acclaim. It was brought back by popular demand in 2011. And here it is once more, this time with new songs!

Come with us as we head down under the boardwalk to a world of snappy, streetwise shellfish and spirited, singing sea birds. Meet the Clams, a groovy gang of crustaceans who are here to rap, rock, and roll. They wish for nothing more than to be left alone by the Gulls, their mortal enemies. These lovely, feathered crooners just will not let them be!  But things on the beach get even more conflicted when the unspeakable occurs – a clam falls in love with a seagull! Will the two bands of singing beach-dwellers learn to live together and sing in harmony? You’ll simply have to watch and see!  The show is directed by SLO Little Theatre’s Kevin Harris, with choreography by Leah Kolb, and musical direction by Nate McClure.

After each performance of Under the Boardwalk, the Melodrama presents the I Love the 90’s Vaudeville Revue, which celebrates all the tropes of the decade in sketch and song.  Dust off your dance moves as we take you back to the days of the Carlton, the Cabbage Patch, and, of course, the Running Man.  This was an era when one really did have to scoot one’s boot in order to boogie.  Remember grunge?  It was a whole thing!  Feel free to hum along; just don’t forget to laugh!  The revue is directed by Dan Schultz, with choreography by Leah Kolb.

Performances of Under the Boardwalk and the I Love the 90’s Vaudeville Revue begin on Thursday, June 16 and continue through September 25. These productions run in repertory with the Melodrama’s production of A Witless Rogue starting July 14. Performances are Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 7 PM, Saturdays at 3 and 7 PM, and Sundays at 6 PM. For specific show dates and times visit www.americanmelodrama.com.
