The Santa Maria Valley’s two Rio 2016 Olympians, boxer Karlos Balderas and swimmer Josh Prenot, are being honored by the City of Santa Maria. Balderas will be celebrated at this week’s Downtown Fridays, and both men are welcomed home in banners placed at Perlman Park near the corner of Broadway and Main (Highways 135 and 166).
Balderas, of Santa Maria, will be honored at the Downtown Fridays Farmer’s Market at 6:15 p.m. Friday, August 26th. Santa Maria High School cheerleaders and marching band, and dignitaries, are scheduled to join the celebration. The Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce will distribute 200 American flags from Santa Maria Elks Lodge 1538. Event co-organizer Ed Carcarey said plans are being discussed to honor Prenot on another day.
Hometown supporters cheered on both athletes, viewing their competitions on TVs at the Santa Maria Public Library and at the City’s Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center. Balderas is returning home today from the Olympic Games, where he competed in three matches. In his Olympic debut, Prenot won a silver medal in the 200 meter breaststroke. He grew up in Santa Maria and Orcutt and swam for the Santa Maria Swim Club. At the U.S. Olympic swim trials, he set an American record in the 200 meter breaststroke.
