We recently welcomed Santa Maria Olive Co. to the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Owned and operated by Michael and Lourdez Clayton, the family sees their new business venture as another way they can give back to the local community. The family has always been very involved in giving back to local veterans, and are generously donating 100% of proceeds from their first harvest to local veterans’ organizations.
“It’s been quite an adventure, to say the least,” said Lourdez Clayton. “But this is our first harvest and we’ve been really pleased with the quality of oil we’ve been able to produce.”
The Clayton family has a 6.5 acre olive tree grove, and the olives they produce are then used to make three varieties of ultra premium olive oil.
“Our olive oil is amazing stuff,” Lourdez said. “As we started to do our research, we learned that there are so many different levels of olive oil right now on the market. A lot of which claim to be extra-virgin olive oil when really that is not the case. You have canola oil, vegetable oil infused with some olive oil.”
Lourdez said these oils won’t give the strong flavor of true 100% olive oil, as their product does. “[when you don’t use premium oil], people end up adding more and more oil to their food to try to get the flavor, and it just makes the food more oily and unhealthy.”
Santa Maria Olive Co.’s oils have the rich flavor profiles people seek when buying olive oil. “You can really notice a difference in flavor when you use our oils,” Lourdez said. “And our oils are free of chemicals, free of pesticides. So your’e getting an amazing product.”
The Clayton family is passionate about providing a high quality product for the community, while also being able to give back to those in need. “We’re blessed that we are able to donate our proceeds to local veterans,” Michael Clayton said. “And we hope we can be used as an example for others in our local community, and that other businesses who are able to will give back to those in need as well.”
Santa Maria Olive Co. hopes to have their tasting room open in 2017. For the time being, you can stop by Michael Clayton’s office (400 E. Orange Street, Santa Maria) on Saturdays form 1pm – 3pm to taste and purchase their oils. You can also visit their website to purchase oils and learn more about the company.
