The Santa Maria Public Library facilitates a monthly book club named The Valley Reads.  The club meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month in Shepard Hall from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The next meeting will be Tuesday, October 25th from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Each month, a new title is read and discussed, along with coffee and snacks served. To join The Valley Reads, please come to the Santa Maria Public Library.  Sign-ups are available at the second floor information desk.

This month’s selection is Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz. Things have never been easy for Oscar, a sweet but disastrously overweight ghetto nerd, a New Jersey romantic who dreams of becoming the Dominican J.R.R. Tolkien and, most of all, of finding love. But Oscar may never get what Oscar wants, thanks to the fuku – the ancient curse that has haunted Oscar’s family for generations, dooming them to prison, torture, tragic accidents, and, above all, ill-starred love. Oscar, still dreaming of a first kiss, is only its most recent victim – until the fateful summer that Mr. Wao decides to be its last.

The author immerses readers in the uproarious lives of the hero Oscar, the runaway sister Lola, and the ferocious beauty-queen mother Belicia, and in the family’s epic journey from Santo Domingo to Washington Heights to New Jersey’s Bergenline and back again.  The Brief Wondrous Oscar Wao went on to win numerous awards in 2008, such as the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

The library’s hours are 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The library is closed on Sunday. The library is located at 421 S. McClelland Street.
