The City of Santa Maria Recreation and Park Department invites community residents to the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday, December 2nd at the City Hall Courtyard, located on the corner of Cook Street and Broadway (Highway 135). Festivities begin at 5:15 p.m. and include refreshments, holiday caroling by the Coastal Voices choir, and the grand illumination of the 24-foot Christmas tree.

This year, the light switch will be flipped by 14-year old Reyna Reyes, a Pioneer Valley High School student and aspiring-vlogger battling leukemia. Reyna was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 10, but the blood cancer has not deterred her from partaking in millennial hobbies. When she’s not singing along to the pop music of Canadian Shawn Mendes, Reyna enjoys watching inspiring YouTube-vlogger Dan the Diamond Minecart and recreating online comedian Roman Atwood’s pranks.

Reyna finds that hanging out with her friends is very therapeutic, and she is excited to invite all of them to the tree lighting ceremony. Reyna participates in a Mission Hope Cancer Center resource program for youth diagnosed with cancer. She currently mentors a young girl also battling leukemia, reminding the girl to remain positive and joyful. Join Reyna’s grandparents and Chihuahua-Yorkie mix “Tito” in witnessing Reyna flip the switch that lights the community tree and begins the season of lights, sights, and holiday nights.
