The Santa Maria Public Library facilitates a monthly book club named The Valley Reads.  The club meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month in Shepard Hall. The next meeting will be Tuesday, November 22nd from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Each month a new title is read and discussed, along with coffee and snacks served.

To join The Valley Reads, please come to the Santa Maria Public Library.  Sign-ups are available at the second floor information desk.

This month’s selection is A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan. This is a book about the interplay of time and music, and about the stirrings and transformations set inexorably in motion by even the most passing conjunction of fates. In a breathtaking array of styles and tones ranging from tragedy to satire to PowerPoint, Egan captures the undertow of self-destruction that people all must either master or succumb to; the basic human hunger for redemption; and the universal tendency to reach for both and escape the merciless progress of time in the transporting realms of art and music. Sly, startling, exhilarating work from a bold writer.

This book won the 2010 National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction, and the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

The library’s hours are 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The library is closed on Sunday. The library is located at 421 S. McClelland Street.
