We recently welcomed Legal Aid Foundation of Santa Barbara County to the Chamber with a Ribbon cutting!
Legal Aid Foundation provides legal services for people facing a civil issues who cannot afford an attorney.
“We provide a variety of services,” explained Molora Vadnais, Executive Director of Legal Aid Foundation of Santa Barbara County. “We do housing law – assisting tennants who are being evicted and in danger of becoming homeless. We assist domestic violence victims with their initial civil issues including restraining orders as well as custody, visitation, divorces, things like that. And we also do consumer protection. So we assist people who for some reason cannot navigate the system on their own – they are elderly, they have some sort of disability – and they have been defrauded in some way. We also help anyone who is being foreclosed upon.”
Legal Aid Foundation of Santa Barbara County is able to offer all of their services free of charge thanks to a series of federal, state and local grants, and also donations from the city, county and private donations from the general community.
“All of our services are free of charge, however we do ask for a twenty dollar donation if people can give it,” Vadnais said. “That is mainly because for some people, there’s a pride issue involved. And being able to give a little bit helps with that.”
“As an attorney, part of our ethical duty is to help those in need,” Vadnais said. “And so many attorneys, they have to go to work every day like everyone else. But, to be in a position to be able to help people who really need it, it’s a wonderful way to spend your time.”
