Santa Maria residents are encouraged to use the draft map template designed by the City-hired demographer to assist in developing proposed maps for district elections. The template is available on the City’s webpage, www.cityofsantamaria.org/districtelections.
Residents’ proposed maps are to be submitted to the demographer by e-mail no later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11th. For those who have already submitted a map, there is no need to resubmit as the demographer will be working on those submitted maps.
The City Council on February 21st launched the process to convert its elections from the current at-large voting system to a district-based process. The City anticipates the process to be completed no later than the end of May 2017. As proposed, the first district-based election is to be held in 2018, when two City Council seats will be up for election, followed in 2020 by the remainder of the districts.
