A $2,500 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the party responsible for destroying the playground equipment at Armstrong Park.
The City of Santa Maria has issued a $2,000 reward and City Councilmember Mike Cordero has pledged another $500, bringing the reward to $2,500.
The park’s large play structure for children was destroyed by a fire shortly before 1 a.m. on Monday, March 27th. The structure was worth about $200,000, not including the cost of installation.
Information about the fire should be directed to Santa Maria Fire Marshal Darrell Delgado at 925-0951 ext. 1578. The cause of the fire is listed as undetermined.
The City plans to purchase and install a replacement structure this summer, but still needs to raise sufficient funds. The strategy is a combination of public donations and City funds. The City will redirect $45,000 from playground funds for other purposes, and redirect nearly $170,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds as approved on Tuesday, April 4th by the City Council.
