We recently welcomed Never Too Late Fitness, Home of Rock Steady Boxing Santa Maria, to the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce with a ribbon cutting!

Owner April Sargeant started Never Too Late Fitness to offer personal fitness training services to clients, and recently also became certified to teach Rock Steady Boxing, a non-contact boxing program for people who are living with Parkinson’s Disease.

“The program helps combat the effects of what Parkinson’s does to the body,” explained April Sargeant, owner of  Never Too Late Fitness, Home of Rock Steady Boxing Santa Maria. “We train everything from balance to agility to hand eye coordination and fine motor skills. And we have a good time while working out – it’s a lot of fun.”

Rock Steady Boxing classes typically run around an hour long and consist of a warm up, work out, core workout and cool down/stretching. “It’s high intensity,” Sargeant said. “Part of the program is forced intense exercise – that’s where people find the most results happen. Everyone always has a lot of fun – people are sweaty and tired when they leave here, but they feel great.”

Sargeant decided to begin offering the Rock Steady Boxing program when she was asked to assist a friend’s husband who had Parkinson’s, and realized there wasn’t a program locally that offered the services that Rock Steady Boxing does.

“There’s no program here locally for people with Parkinson’s,” Sargeant said. “The closest secondary facility for Rock Steady Boxing is Santa Barbara, and that’s quite a bit of a drive for a lot of people here locally who could really use a program like this.”

Sargeant currently works with 12 Parkinsons clients. Shet says seeing the affect the Rock Steady Boxing program can have on helping people with Parkinson’s is what inspired her to bring the program here locally.

“Through my research and getting trained in the program I was able to see just how much Rock Steady Boxing can help people with Parkinson’s, and how happy people are when leaving the classes.” she said. “And that lit a fire for me, it got me passionate about the program. I’m really excited to bring Rock Steady Boxing to Santa Maria and help others.”
