Geocaching Party a Success

The City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department hosted a successful Geocaching Party over the weekend at Los Flores Ranch Park. Families and friends gathered for a morning of geocaching, stories, refreshments, and a free raffle. The City would like to acknowledge Jim Batterson for leading the party-goers through a day of fun-filled activities.

A new geocache went “live” during the event which makes a total of 25 geocaches hidden throughout the Los Flores Ranch Park. There was assistance available for those with no prior geocaching experience while experts prevailed in finding the more challenging caches.

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game in which participants use GPS, mobile devices, or other navigational systems to hide and seek containers called geocaches at over two-million specific locations marked by coordinates all over the world. Geocaching was established in 2000 when a GPS enthusiast wanted to test the accuracy of the upgraded GPS technology. The idea quickly spread and became a popular recreational activity throughout the world.
