City Recognizes Employees for “Going the Extra Mile”

The City of Santa Maria is pleased to recognize as the newest recipients of its Going the Extra Mile (GEM) Award, Katrina Garcia, Management Analyst, and Aryanna Reyes, Human Resources Clerk, of the City Manager’s Office/Human Resources Division. This is in recognition of their initiative in helping develop this year the City’s overall succession planning program. Each will receive a certificate and recognition at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, November 21st.

The Human Resources Division of the City Manager’s Office in the past year developed the City’s overall succession planning program, composed of numerous specialty programs, in addition to routine job responsibilities. Garcia and Reyes were instrumental in this effort. Each of the nine individual programs improve training and development, and enhance recruitment and succession planning. These initiatives include launching the City’s own Toastmasters club, the professional development association known as Shaping Hardworking Innovative Professionals (SHIP), the quarterly Speaker Series, Speed Coaching, a Mentoring Program, Behind the Scenes Site Tours, and local school partnerships. Those initiatives are above and beyond the City-sponsored Regional Supervisory and Leadership Academies through The Centre for Organizational Effectiveness, and the Phi Theta Kappa Leadership Development Studies. In total, all of these programs coordinated by the HR team stimulate interested employees, and display effective leadership, initiative and teamwork. In fact, the City has received recognition from the Municipal Management Association of Southern California (MMASC) for this effort.

Criteria for the GEM Award are: Exhibiting effective leadership on specific assignments; demonstrating positive service to a customer or co-worker; going “above and beyond” the call of duty; showing special initiative, creativity, teamwork, cost containment efforts and entrepreneurial spirit in providing a high level of customer service; and consistently embracing the City’s service standards.
